interface is looking for a student assistant to support its Global Chip Dynamics Programme as soon as possible, working 15-20 hours per week. The positions can be carried out remotely from Germany.
interface is an independent expert organisation specialising in information technology and public policy. Our goal is to ensure that political decision-makers have the expertise and ideas necessary to create policies and make decisions that put the public interest first.
Our Global Chip Dynamics Programme examines how Europe can strengthen its role in the global semiconductor value chain while advancing climate and environmental goals. Our research brings together two closely connected areas:
Technological competitiveness and geopolitics: We analyse Europes position in the global chip ecosystem, the effects of geopolitical tensions, and the policies needed to build resilient semiconductor supply chains.
Sustainability: We examine the environmental footprint of semiconductor production and use, and how policy can support a more sustainable chip industry. This includes their dual role in enabling the green transition while consuming resources and generating emissions. Our energy and AI research explores how Europe can align the expansion of AI infrastructure and data centres with electricity supply, grid capacity and climate goals.
Across both areas, we develop policy recommendations for European and national decision-makers. Because the semiconductor value chain is global and highly interdependent, our work also looks at opportunities for international cooperation. We engage with policymakers, industry, academia and civil society to identify approaches that combine technological competitiveness with environmental sustainability.
As a student assistant, you will support this research and help turn findings into accessible policy publications and expert discussions. The role offers an opportunity to gain practical experience at the intersection of technology policy, geopolitics and sustainability.
The position is part-time, with 15-20 hours per week and is initially offered for six months or for the duration of the current semester. The contract may be extended to a maximum total duration of two years, provided you remain enrolled as a regular student. You will work remotely with team members based in Berlin and Brussels.
Collecting, organising and processing quantitative data, for example on the semiconductor industry and its environmental footprint, using Excel or comparable tools.
Summarising research findings and policy developments to support the teams analyses.
Supporting the drafting, editing, fact-checking, and publication of policy analyses and data briefs.
Helping to prepare and organise expert workshops and interviews, including background research, preparation of materials, and documentation of key findings.
You are currently enrolled at a university or university of applied sciences.
You live in Germany and will carry out your work from there.
You are interested in technology policy, the semiconductor industry, geopolitics, and environmental sustainability.
You enjoy investigating complex topics and conducting independent research, including technical questions.
You have some research experience through your studies, internships, or other relevant activities.
You are comfortable collecting and organising data and have basic knowledge of Excel. Previous experience with data processing or analysis is an advantage.
You work carefully and independently, communicate proactively, and enjoy contributing to a team.
You are comfortable collaborating remotely.
You are proficient in spoken and written English (C2 level).
Practical experience in policy research at an independent, internationally operating think tank.
Opportunities to learn from researchers working on semiconductor policy, sustainability, and international cooperation.
The option to work remotely within Germany.
A supportive team that values consideration, learning from mistakes, diversity, and equality.
Regular opportunities to exchange ideas with colleagues working across technology and public policy.
An hourly wage of 15,90 EUR
A monthly mobile office allowance of 20 EUR/month.
We welcome applications from people regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental ability, religion and belief, sexual orientation and social background. We also encourage people from ethnic minorities and other groups that are underrepresented in civil society organizations to apply.
Please apply by 15th November 2026 submitting:

Your answer to the following question (in max. 5 sentences): What research topic or recent development related to our programme would you like to understand better, and why?
Your earliest possible starting date.
Please combine your documents into one PDF. Interviews will take place after the application deadline.
